The Neustadt cemetery

A site of historical and cultural heritage, part of the Hanover Sculpture Mile, and an important cultural landmark.

The Neustadt cemetery is located in the north of the city center. Not far from the popular stone gate, this green area with its historic gravestones offers a relaxing stay away from the hustle and bustle.

The Neustadt Cemetery in Hannover, also known as St. Andreas Cemetery, was established in 1646 and served as a burial ground until 1876. It is located on Königsworther Platz and is now a listed public park. The cemetery is home to notable grave monuments, including that of composer Heinrich Marschner and the grave of the so-called “Laced Maiden,” who is said to have died from wearing a corset that was too tight.

The cemetery has been expanded several times and downsized after World War II. Today, it is part of the Hannover Sculpture Mile and an important cultural landmark.

History and significance

The Neustadt Cemetery was established after an earlier cemetery in Calenberger Neustadt was decommissioned. It served as a final resting place not only for the townspeople but also for members of the court of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. After its closure in 1876, the site was further reduced in size during World War II. Notable figures such as Johann Gerhard Helmcke, a wealthy citizen of Hanover, and Johann Georg Zimmermann, the electoral court physician, were laid to rest here.

Monuments and sights

The cemetery is known for its diverse and historic grave monuments. These include the graves of Hammet and Hasan, who were taken prisoner during the Turkish Wars in the 17th century, as well as the grave of the Russian Cossack officer Vasily Gavrilov. A particular highlight is the tomb of the “Laced Maiden,” Anna Margaretha Borcherding.

Culture and memory

The Neustadt Cemetery is not only a place of peace and quiet, but also a living testament to Hannover’s history. The gravestones tell the story of the various eras and figures that have shaped the city. Today, the cemetery is a popular spot for walks and cultural events, offering a green oasis in the heart of the city.
