What did the Eilenriede look like in the past? Quite different from today. There were scattered oak trees, vast meadows, and little undergrowth. People drove their livestock into the forest to graze and gathered firewood themselves. And you could still hear the hoopoe in the branches: Uuhup. Uuhup. Like a soft horn. Today, you can hear this now-rare bird again. With your smartphone in your pocket and headphones on, at Station 3 of the audio walk “Eilenriede in Your Ear.” It’s all about logging and the Eilenriede Advisory Board.
The company Tonspur Stadtlandschaft produced the installation on behalf of the City of Hannover and the Region Hannover and installed it between Emmichplatz and Steuerndieb, between Heiligers Brunnen and the mountain bike course.
The exhibition covers nothing less than the entire history of the city forest, which is the largest inner-city forest in Europe. And the present day gets its fair share of attention, too. How and why horses are still used in the Eilenriede, what happens to dead trees, and the consequences of climate change—all of this is explained to us by a host of Eilenriede experts, from foresters to mushroom experts, over a total runtime of about 80 minutes. And at every stop, you can hear a bird, from the wren to the tawny owl.
Just like with “Rad,” the lawn maze: The music captures the meditative atmosphere of the space; the track guides you through the maze and adapts to the length of the path. You can listen to everything in sequence or piece by piece. You can follow the order or not. You can download the files to your phone in advance or access them at each listening station via a QR code.
