Hannover Adventure Zoo: History and Facts

Giraffe Lodge at the Adventure Zoo

Discover over 160 years of history at the Hannover Adventure Zoo.

The Hannover Adventure Zoo has been an integral part of the city since the 19th century. Discover how the zoo has evolved since its opening in 1865 and what defines it today.

From a 19th-Century Zoo to an Adventure Zoo

The Hanover Zoo opened its doors on May 4, 1865, and is thus one of Germany’s oldest zoos. At the time, it was home to just under 500 animals. Over the decades, new animal enclosures and facilities were built, while the requirements for animal care and visitor experiences also evolved.

The zoo underwent a major transformation in the 1990s. With the “Zoo 2000” concept, the zoo began its transition toward large-scale themed worlds. Since then, the Erlebnis-Zoo has combined animal observation with landscapes and narrative elements.

Seven themed areas define the zoo today

Today, visitors to the Hannover Adventure Zoo can explore seven themed areas. These include the Zambezi, Yukon Bay, the Jungle Palace, the Outback, and Afi Mountain, among others.

According to Visit Hannover, more than 2,000 animals live at the zoo. The themed areas highlight different regions and habitats, making the tour varied and interesting.

More than 160 Years of Zoo History

In 2025, the Hannover Adventure Zoo celebrated its 160th anniversary. The park has undergone significant changes, evolving from a traditional 19th-century zoo to today’s themed areas.
