Garden cemetery

The Gartenfriedhof in Hannover, founded in 1741, is located in the city center and is now a major park.

Garden cemetery

It originally served as a burial ground for the garden community outside the Aegidientor. The adjacent Gartenkirche was built in 1749. The cemetery contains many 19th-century Neoclassical tombs, including the graves of famous figures such as Charlotte Kestner, Caroline Herschel, and Johann Heinrich Ramberg.

The garden cemetery was closed in the 19th century but has since been revitalized through restoration efforts and cultural events. Today, the cemetery is a place of remembrance and relaxation, featuring a bronze information board that guides visitors on a tour of the historic gravesites.

Since 2011, the nonprofit organization “Renaissance Gartenfriedhof e.V.” has been working to preserve and enhance the grounds, promoting grave site sponsorships, and organizing cultural events.
