St. Nikolai Cemetery
The Old St. Nicholas Cemetery in Hannover, one of the city’s oldest cemeteries, offers a glimpse into Hannover’s eventful history.
St. Nikolai Cemetery
Originally established in the 13th century as a burial ground for lepers, it was expanded several times over the centuries and played a significant role during the plague epidemics and wars. Today, it is a protected historic site and part of a park that commemorates the historical significance of the location.
Historical Significance and Development
The cemetery was established outside the city walls of Hanover in conjunction with a hospital for lepers. The first documented mention dates back to 1325, when a chapel for funeral services was added. Over the centuries, particularly in the 16th century, the cemetery was expanded several times to accommodate the many victims of the plague and wars. The cemetery was closed in 1866 and has belonged to the city of Hannover since 1890.
Destruction and reconstruction
During World War II and the subsequent reconstruction, the cemetery sustained severe damage. Road widening projects resulted in the loss of a significant portion of the historic grounds and many gravestones. Despite these losses, some historic elements were preserved and were designated as a historic landmark in 1987.
The Cemetery Today
As part of the “Hannover City 2020+” program, the cemetery was redesigned. Road narrowings and the downsizing of the Klagesmarkt roundabout made it possible to bring the northern and southern sections of the cemetery closer together again. Today, 278 gravestones remain there, including the well-known monument to the poet Ludwig Hölty.
Today, the Old St. Nicholas Cemetery serves not only as a green space for relaxation, but also as a monument and memorial site. Guided tours and informational signs offer visitors insights into the rich history of the cemetery and its surroundings.
