Ricklingen City Cemetery
The Ricklingen Municipal Cemetery in Hannover was established in 1908 as the Linden Main Cemetery and covers approximately 54 hectares, containing around 30,000 graves. Originally created in response to industrialization and population growth in Linden, it was renamed in 1920 following Linden’s incorporation into Hannover. The cemetery is home to numerous graves of well-known figures, including resistance fighters and politicians. Of particular note is the grave of honor of Dr. Kurt Schumacher, a prominent politician and resistance fighter.
Another unique feature is the section for anonymous urn burials, which has been in existence since 1998. The cemetery also features several sculptures and monuments that invite visitors to pause and reflect. For a special farewell, the cemetery also offers “Rooms of Silence” as open-air memorial sites that can be used for a contemplative and personal farewell.
