Tiergarten

The wildlife park with its striking old trees is one of the most popular leisure activities.

Tiergarten

The 112-hectare recreational forest attracts numerous visitors all year round with its wildlife.

We owe this to Duke Johann Friedrich, who had the Tiergarten established in 1678–79 for royal hunts. At that time, 120 fallow deer were released there. However, the duke did not live to see the first royal hunt in 1680, as he had died a year earlier while traveling in Italy.

The Tiergarten has been open to the public since 1799. The fallow deer population has remained stable to this day.

From the very beginning, the focus was on hunting, game, historical forms of silviculture (hutting forest, cutting technique) and forest aesthetics, in contrast to many other forests that are geared towards timber production. This enabled the development of old-growth forests, which today offer impressive forest images of rare beauty and expressiveness.

In addition to fallow deer, the Tiergarten is now home primarily to wild boars and roe deer. Since 1997, the former wild horse enclosure has been home to 10 to 20 red deer. In 2022, a small herd of mouflon moved in. The Tiergarten also serves as a habitat for numerous bird species and rare bats.

A special highlight, especially for children and families, is the Tiergartenfest, which takes place every year on the second weekend in October. This is the forestry department’s way of thanking the children for collecting acorns and chestnuts, which are fed to the animals in winter.

The Tiergarten is open daily from 7 a.m. until dark. From November 6 through mid-December, the Tiergarten opens at noon on Mondays through Wednesdays.
