The Kiesteich Lohnde Information Profile—What Else You Should Know

The Lohnder Kiesteich is located on the outskirts of Lohnde in the Leine River floodplain. This quarry lake, fed by groundwater, features a natural entry point for swimming. The park surrounding the lake is primarily used for recreation. Admission to the lake area is free. There is no parking available at the lake. Fishing is not permitted there. The local diving club has permission to dive there. There is no lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk!

The Department of Health, as the responsible authority, conducts regular tests of the bathing water at the swimming area. The first bathing water sample is taken before the start of the season. During the swimming season, from May 15 to September 15, samples are taken once a month. The water is tested for the indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. These results are published here and on the Lower Saxony State Health Office’s bathing water portal, among other places.

If the authorities become aware of a blue-green algae bloom, the water is tested for blue-green algae, and an official warning regarding an acute blue-green algae bloom is issued if necessary. If large quantities of toxic blue-green algae are detected, a swimming ban is imposed and announced both on-site and online.
