Blue Lake info profile
Blauer See, a swimming lake, is located west of the town of Garbsen along the A2. The 600-meter-long sandy beach slopes gently down to the lake and offers the perfect spot for sunbathing and sand play for children. In addition to the 65-meter-long water slide, there is a playground and a barbecue area (available for rent through the on-site restaurant). Special attractions include the water ski course with a shop for swimming gear, the extensive range of sports activities such as beach volleyball and adventure golf at the “Wasserski” parking lot, and the campground.
When the weather is suitable for swimming, a certified lifeguard is on duty at the lake. Parking spaces are available directly on the beach for a fee. Dogs are allowed on a leash on the east shore and on the Blauer See lake terraces.
The lake, fed by groundwater, borders a campground and is located in the “Mittlere Leine” scenic conservation area, surrounded by forests, fields, and pastures.
The Department of Health, as the responsible authority, conducts regular tests of the bathing water at the swimming area. The first water sample is taken before the start of the season. During the swimming season, from May 15 to September 15, samples are taken once a month. The water is tested for the indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. These results are published here and on the Lower Saxony State Health Office’s bathing water portal, among other places.
If the authorities become aware of the occurrence of mass proliferation of blue-green algae, the water is tested for blue-green algae and, if necessary, an official warning of acute occurrence of blue-green algae is issued. If large quantities of toxic blue-green algae are detected, a bathing ban is issued and published on site and on the internet.
