The route is divided into four stages, which, thanks to their good connections to local public transportation, allow for flexible starting points and return trips.
The first stage begins at Maschsee in the center of Hannover and follows the idyllic northern shore, offering views of the New Town Hall. From there, the route runs along the Leine, past the historic Döhren wool mill, into the expansive Leine floodplain with the Lakes of Koldingen, where a diverse array of wildlife and birdlife lines the path.
The second stage stretches from the confluence of the Leine and Innerste rivers near Ruthe along peaceful riverside paths through green countryside all the way to Hildesheim’s Old Town. There, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites—the cathedral and St. Michael’s Church—offer a vivid glimpse into the region’s history.
In the third stage, city life fades into the background. The route winds through nature reserves, sparse forests, and expansive fields and meadows, offering opportunities for tranquility, scenic views, and stops in charming villages.
The fourth stage begins via Wolfsstieg and Gronauer Stieg, offering a striking view of Marienburg Castle. The route then follows the Leine River and passes the Giften Lakes on its way to the charming finish in Sarstedt.
The route can be found on the komoot outdoor platform as part of the Hannover Marketing Hiking Collection.
