Lake Altwarmbüchener See is part of a local recreation area on the edge of the Altwarmbüchen Moor in northeastern Hannover, in the Altwarmbüchen district.
Lake Altwarmbüchener See
After the landscape here had been damaged over the centuries by agricultural peat extraction and drainage, the first decades of this century saw the area filled in with soil excavated during the construction of the Mittellandkanal, as well as the establishment of a waste dump in 1937, which largely destroyed the original bog vegetation.
To further develop the new landscape of the Altwarmbüchen Moor, it was decided—in addition to planting vegetation on the spoil heaps—to create a lake as part of the highway construction project; the lake was completed in 1982 after four years of construction.

The "young" lake has a total size of 150 hectares and a water surface area of 48 hectares. It is 1,500 meters long and a maximum of 450 meters wide. It is 7 to 12 meters deep and has a water volume of around 3.2 million cubic meters. The circular path around the lake is 3.5 kilometers long.
The local recreation area is ideal for relaxing by the water. Activities range from swimming, camping, boating, surfing and hiking to nature observation. The peripheral areas of the lake are of great importance for nature conservation.
