This route is recommended for leisure cyclists who want to explore the Deister without any competitive ambitions. The starting point is the Wennigsen train station. From there, the route winds through the flat Calenberger Land region to Bredenbeck, nine kilometers away—always following the base of the Deister.
Watch: Before you start pedaling toward Bredenbeck, you’ll pass through the center of Wennigsen, which is dominated by the imposing Augustinian monastery, one of the five Calenberg Monasteries. From the Klosteramthof, you’ll reach the double helix at the municipal office. Created by the artisan-philosopher Hugo Kükelhaus, this double spiral fascinates with its constant motion, symbolizing life, transience, and the ever-recurring beginning. Opposite stands a sundial that is unique in the world, created by local master precision engineer Erich Pollähne to mark his 80th birthday and his 25 years of professional work with time monuments.
The bike path takes you along the L 390 to Argestorf, where you’ll pass the Widdergut Viereichen, an imposing lava rock structure. After Argestorf, follow the path along the edge of the forest toward Bredenbeck, keeping an eye out for signs for the Deisterkreisel.
Watch: Bredenbeck Manor: The estate was first mentioned in a document in 1255, when Bishop Wedekind of Minden donated the tithe from Bredenbeck—which had been returned to him by Knight Wulfrad—to the Wennigsen Monastery. In 1338, Knight Herrmann Knigge and his son, squire Heinrich, were granted Bredenbeck Castle. Today, it is used as a working farm around the clock, with large machinery in operation. Therefore, visits are only possible from the farm gate.
Final: An interesting—and, if you’d like, alcohol-fueled—tour of the Warnecke grain distillery, which has been located in Bredenbeck since 1826. Here you can wrap up your tour in style or continue on the Deisterkreisel route. The quickest way back to Hannover is via the L 389 through Holtensen and straight on to the Holtensen/Linderte train station.
For those who want to extend their bike tour through the villages of Wennigsen, the brochure “Die Grüne Kette” offers 38 km of cycling fun around Wennigsen (Deister).
