Sightseeing and adventure cruises on Lake Steinhuder Meer

Explore Lake Steinhuder Meer from the water! Several times a day, the passenger boat “Steinhude” departs from the pier at the Strandterrassen in Steinhude and takes you on a 90-minute cruise along the lake’s shores.

Emigrant boat

Boat trip with the "Emigrant"

The so-called “Auswanderer” are one of the hallmarks of the Lake Steinhuder Meer. With these open sailboats, up to ten meters long, visitors can reach Wilhelmstein Island, the north shore, or other parts of the lake. The boats got their name from the passengers who were sailed to the north shore at the beginning of the last century and thus “emigrated” from Steinhude—which at the time belonged to Schaumburg-Lippe—to the Hannover-Braunschweig region.

Shuttles between the north and south shores

Anyone who has ever wanted to cross a body of water can do so on the passenger ferry “Schaumburg-Lippe.” During the summer, the ferry runs between Mardorf, Wilhelmstein Island, and Steinhude. Good to know: The ferry also carries bicycles.

Drive the car yourself

You can rent pedal boats, rowboats, electric boats, and sailboats from a variety of rental companies. Or, you can bring your own paddleboat and experience the Lake Steinhuder Meer from the captain’s perspective. Of course, you’re also welcome to bring your own canoe or kayak. Suitable launch sites are located in Mardorf on Warteweg (youth hostel), at the DKV Heim (DKV-Weg), and at the swimming beach (Strandweg). On the south shore, launch sites are available at the Steinhude’s Sculpture Promenade, on the swimming island, and at the Hagenburger Canal. For more information, please contact the tourist information offices.

By boat or bicycle

Want to explore the island together, savor the famous Steinhuder smoked eel, or experience the “Blue Wonder”? All this and much more is possible around the largest lake in northwestern
Germany. Groups of visitors are accompanied by trained tour guides. A visit to the Wilhelmstein Island Fortress is not only a journey into the history of Count Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe, but a truly special experience. The magnificent panoramic view from the island’s observatory delights every visitor.
