Over the past century, the former fishing village of Steinhude has developed into an attractive, state-recognized resort. One of its main attractions are the so-called “emigrants.” As early as 100 years ago, these large wooden sailboats were used to transport people from Steinhude—which at the time belonged to Schaumburg-Lippe—to the northern shore, where they “emigrated” to the Hannover region.
Numerous recreational facilities, such as the Nature Park Information Center, the Butterfly Farm, and the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum—which also houses a toy museum—invite visitors to explore nature and culture. The cozy atmosphere of the restored town center and the barn district, combined with the tourist information office, local restaurants, and a wide variety of events, creates the perfect vacation atmosphere.
Steinhude Barn District
The Steinhude Barn District comprises 13 historic half-timbered barns. In the past, grain, hay, and straw were stored here; today, the barns house a toy museum and host many interesting exhibitions and events. Here, you can start a wonderful day out in a historic setting or round it off with a delicious meal.
