Wettmar Post Mill

A Wettmar institution: the post mill!

Wettmar Post Mill in Burgwedel

The Wettmar post mill is an important technical monument and one of the historic landmarks of the Region Hannover. The mill was built in 1798 and traces its roots back to an even older milling tradition, which is documented as far back as the 16th century.

This classic post mill stands on a wooden frame and can be adjusted to face the direction of the wind. With its two grinding gears, as well as its sails and louvered wings, it vividly demonstrates how historical milling technology worked.

After remaining in use until the 1940s, the mill initially lost its original function. In the decades that followed, it was used, among other things, as a weekend home before finally undergoing extensive restoration. In 2011, it was moved to a new location with sufficient wind conditions and rebuilt as a fully functional mill.

Today, the post mill serves as a demonstration site and educational center for the traditional craft of milling. At events such as German Mill Day or during guided tours, visitors can see the machinery in action and gain insights into the history of mill culture.

The combination of history, craftsmanship, and hands-on technology makes the Wettmar post mill a special destination in the Holiday Region Hannover.
