The Hannoversche Tram Museum in Sehnde-Wehmingen, near Hannover, offers a glimpse into the history of the tram since its early days during the Industrial Revolution. Since 2022, the site has also been home to the Hannoversche Telecommunications Museum and the North German Museum of Hi-Fi and Studio Technology.
A Colorful Collection: The Hannoversche Tram Museum.
At the end of the 19th century, the streetcar was an important part of industrialization and urban development. It was not until the 1950s that it faced competition from increasing car traffic and had to give way in many places. The trend was to drive yourself instead of being driven.
From the 19th century horse-drawn streetcar to the subway
In its indoor halls and outdoor grounds, the Hanover Tram Museum displays a selection of vehicles—ranging from 19th-century horse-drawn trams to the subway. The main building features exhibitions on the technical and historical context of the “tram.” These include, for example, the development of individual transit companies, technical aspects of streetcars, and a subway signal box from the Berlin Transport Company. Visitors can ride on the streetcars, practice driving and braking on a simulator, or visit the cinema. The museum also offers special exhibitions and events for all ages.
Support association uses facilities of the old potash plant
For the museum, the sponsoring association uses the largely preserved facilities of the old potash works, the buildings and the tracks of the former works railroad, all laid out in the standard gauge of the railroad. Streetcars have the same gauge.
Telecommunications and HiFi Museum
Since 2022, the site has also been home to the Hannoversche Telecommunications Museum and the North German Museum of Hi-Fi and Studio Technology. Both exhibition areas can be reached via a historic tram on the regularly scheduled loop route.
