The Hannoversche Tram Museum in Sehnde-Wehmingen, near Hannover, offers a glimpse into the history of the tram since its early days during the Industrial Revolution. A Colorful Collection: The Hannoversche Tram Museum.
Hands-On Tram History
The Hanover Tram Museum brings the history of local public transportation to life. In the exhibition halls and on the spacious outdoor grounds, you’ll find lovingly restored trams from Hannover and numerous European cities. The collection offers a compelling look at how local public transportation has changed since the late 19th century and the impact the tram has had on urban development.
Experience Historic Vehicles Up Close
Many of the historic streetcars are more than just exhibits. During the season, you can ride on select vehicles and explore the museum grounds from a unique perspective. The volunteer drivers provide fascinating insights into the technology, history, and operation of these historic vehicles.
Get Involved Instead of Just Watching
The museum delights visitors of all ages with interactive exhibits. In the simulator, you can experience for yourself what it’s like to drive a streetcar. If you’d like to take things a step further, you even have the opportunity to drive a historic streetcar yourself on select dates. Tickets for this special experience should be booked online in advance.
Entertainment for the whole family
A theater showing documentaries about streetcars and an H0-scale model train layout offer additional variety. The model train layout has its own hours of operation and adds even more exciting experiences to a visit to the museum, especially for technology enthusiasts and families.
Events Throughout the Year
Even beyond the permanent exhibition, a visit is well worth it. Special events are held regularly, including the US Car Classics Meeting, Classic Car Day, and the atmospheric Festival of Lights with a lantern parade and a haunted train ride. As a result, the museum continually offers new experiences for visitors of all ages.
A museum with an extraordinary setting
The museum is located on the grounds of a former potash mine. In addition to the Hannoversche Tram Museum, the site is also home to the Hannoversche Telecommunications Museum and the North German Museum of Hi-Fi and Studio Technology. In the future, a mining museum will also be added to this diverse collection of museums. All of these attractions are easily accessible by historic trams.
Run with passion by volunteers
Behind the scenes at the museum, numerous volunteers are hard at work. Whether it’s in the workshop, providing transportation services, assisting visitors, or maintaining the grounds—their dedication ensures that historic streetcars are preserved and that the history of technology remains accessible to future generations.
Telecommunications and HiFi Museum
Since 2022, the site has also been home to the Hannoversche Telecommunications Museum and the North German Museum of Hi-Fi and Studio Technology. Both exhibition areas can be reached via a historic tram on the regularly scheduled loop route.
