The Wennigsen Local History Museum is located in the Obere Mühle, a half-timbered house built around 1700. The Obere Mühle was one of three water mills in Wennigsen. Its final use was as a sawmill. In 1975, the building—which had since been acquired by the municipality of Wennigsen—was designated a historic landmark and made available to the Förderkreis Heimatmuseum Wennigsen (Deister) e.V. for the establishment of a local history museum. In 2002, the millwheel was restored using traditional methods appropriate for a historic building and made visible for tourist purposes. It now turns again as a display wheel. In the museum, visitors can watch a video clip demonstrating the milling process.
The goal and purpose of the Friends of the Museum is to foster an exchange of ideas between young and old and to promote a sense of community, not least—and above all—in the museum’s cozy gathering space and on the museum grounds. The annual Museum Day and flea market, as well as the various themed exhibitions held throughout the year, help to achieve this.
