Insect museum and butterfly farm

At Steinhuder Meer, visitors can not only explore the wonderful world of butterflies, but also view a collection of more than 100,000 specimens.

Butterflies from all over the world can be seen at the butterfly farm.

Since 2000, the Insect Museum and its butterfly farm have been attracting butterfly lovers of all ages with a large free-flight hall and an extensive collection consisting of more than 100,000 butterflies, insects, and beetles. The exhibition features a selection of the most beautiful and largest beetles—including, for example, the world’s largest longhorn beetle—as well as butterflies, moths, and many other unique insects. All exhibits are labeled with their names, locations where they were found, and dates.

Affiliated butterfly farm

Around 400 colorful, large and small exotic butterflies flutter amidst a tropical plant world and can be experienced up close.

When can I visit the museum?

The museum is open during the following hours (as of September 10, 2026):

Is the museum accessible (mobility)? – Yes. The pathways in the Tropical Hall are at ground level and are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
