Wilhelmstein Island
At Steinhuder Meer itself, in the picturesque vacation towns of Steinhude, Mardorf, or Hagenburg, you can enjoy the famous Steinhude smoked eel and even watch it being prepared at one of the many eel smokehouses. From Steinhude, take a trip on the fishermen’s traditional sailboats—known as “Auswanderer”—to the island fortress of Wilhelmstein. In case of bad weather, there are several interesting museums to choose from—unique in their kind—such as the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum and the Toy and Children’s World Museum in Steinhude, as well as the Blacksmith Museum in Neustadt-Helstorf.
