Döhrener Turm

The Döhrener Turm is a medieval watchtower.

Döhrener Turm (South City)

The Döhrener Turm is a historic watchtower in Hannover that was built in the 14th century. Originally part of the Hannoversche Landwehr, it served both military and customs purposes. The tower is located in the Südstadt district, directly on Hildesheimer Straße, and is a prominent landmark in the cityscape.

Location
The Döhrener Turm stands on a traffic island that also houses a light rail station. Although the tower bears the name of the Döhren district, it is geographically part of the Südstadt. Nearby, Hildesheimer Straße serves as a major arterial road leading out of the city center.

History
In the Middle Ages, specifically in 1382, the tower was built as part of the local defense system to protect the city of Hannover. With its three stories and walls 1.3 meters thick, the tower served, among other things, to monitor the area and prevent the theft of timber from the Eilenriede. The tower was not only a military outpost but also a customs station and an inn. In 1486, the tower played an important role in the defense against an attack by the Guelph Duke Heinrich von Wolfenbüttel. The tower’s defenders put up a fight but were ultimately defeated, and the tower was burned to the ground. Two years later, it was rebuilt, as evidenced by an inscription.

From the 17th century to the present day
After the Thirty Years' War, the tower lost its military significance. From the 17th century onward, it was used solely as a customs post, and toward the end of the 19th century, the tower was renovated to include an additional half-timbered story. Around 1900, residential buildings were constructed near the tower, and the tram line from Hannover to Laatzen now ran directly past it.

During World War II, the tower was damaged in the air raids on Hanover, though it was not directly hit. In the years following the war, only temporary repairs were made. In 1975, the tower underwent extensive restoration with the help of a local resident, and in 1982, it celebrated its 600th anniversary.

Special features
The Döhrener Turm is not only an important historical landmark but also an icon of the city of Hannover. It is particularly noteworthy that the nightly flight path runs directly over the tower, which is a unique feature. Today, the tower is a popular destination for visitors and is used for events and tours.
