Gallery building with Golden Gate

The gallery building with the Golden Gate is one of the most popular photo motifs.

Herrenhausen Gallery

The gallery was built between 1694 and 1698 by Brand Westermann according to designs by the Electoral Palatinate master builder Johann Peter Wachter. Originally, the plan envisaged an elongated building with two pavilion-like wings. The central building was to be a 200-foot-long orangery hall for overwintering the plants. During the construction work, Electress Sophie suggested extending the purpose of the building so that the large hall could also be used as a banqueting hall and the wings could also be used for living. The gallery building also contains the Leibniz Room, where Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz lived at the time. The Electress commissioned the Venetian painter Tommaso Giusti to decorate the interior of the gallery building with frescoes. To mark the 300th anniversary of the Great Garden in 1966, Danish architect Arne Jacobsen designed an understated glass hall that serves as a foyer for events.
