Marienwerder Monastery and Hinüberscher Garden

The Marienwerder Convent was founded in 1196 as an Augustinian convent and is located in the Marienwerder district in the northwest of Hanover. It is one of the five Calenberg convents and is known for its Romanesque-style convent church, which was consecrated around 1200 and is now considered the oldest church in Hanover. The church underwent several renovations, including destruction by fire in 1335, followed by restoration and rededication. In 1542, the convent became Protestant as part of the Reformation, and during the Thirty Years’ War, it suffered the effects of looting. Beginning in 1760, Jobst Anton von Hinüber transformed the convent into a model agricultural estate and added a garden in the style of an “Anglo-Chinese garden,” which was considered a must-see for cultured guests. In the 19th century, the convent church underwent extensive renovation, and in 1927, the city of Hanover acquired the convent estate. Today, the Klosterkammer Hannover manages the monastery’s assets and buildings. The convent currently consists of only a few women, and the monastery serves as a residential center for the elderly with outpatient care. The monastery church is also used by the Marienwerder parish, which is affiliated with partner parishes in Leipzig and Tanzania.
