Horse tower
The tower stands directly in front of the ice rink.
The Pferdeturm is a late-medieval watchtower dating from the 14th century and was part of the Hanover Landwehr.
It is located in the Kleefeld district and was built in 1387 as a defensive structure between Hanover and Misburg. The tower has an almost square floor plan with sides measuring about four meters and is constructed of fieldstone with brick stories above. In 1892, a half-timbered story with a pointed roof was added to the building
The tower was originally used to monitor traffic and as a customs station. Over the centuries, the area around the tower developed into a popular excursion destination, particularly due to a restaurant and the nearby cycle race track. The name "Pferdeturm" (horse tower) comes from a stable for horses and foals that was built there by the Hanoverian council. In 1889, the restaurant was destroyed by fire, which led to the tower being renovated. In the 19th century, the tower lost its military significance and was used as a forestry office.
Today, the ice rink at the Pferdeturm is located nearby, and the area around the tower is a popular recreational spot.
