Garden church and cemetery

Many a celebrity lies in the garden cemetery.

The church was built between 1887 and 1891 by the architect Rudolph Eberhard Hillebrand. It is a Neo-Gothic hall church constructed of Deister sandstone and was consecrated on February 8, 1891. Many famous figures are buried in the garden cemetery in front of it, including Charlotte Kestner. She was the inspiration for Lotte in Goethe’s *The Sorrows of Young Werther*.
