Why is it worth visiting the Hannover Market Hall?
The Market Hall is one of the city center’s culinary hotspots. Vendors, restaurants, and specialty food shops bring together a variety of culinary experiences under one roof. Discover fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and sausage products, cheese, and specialty foods, or enjoy a freshly prepared meal right on the spot.
The selection ranges from Italian and Asian cuisine to Middle Eastern and Spanish specialties, as well as seafood, baked goods, bars, and cafés. This makes the market hall just as suitable for a quick lunch stop as it is for a leisurely culinary exploration.
Regional Products Meet International Cuisine
It's the mix that makes it so special: Try familiar regional specialties while discovering flavors from different countries and cuisines. Buy ingredients to take home, or take a seat right at one of the stalls.
The market hall is thus more than just a traditional shopping destination. It combines a market, dining, and social interaction into a vibrant part of Hannover.
"The Belly of Hannover": A Meeting Place Steeped in History
The history of the market hall dates back to 1892. That was when the first municipal market hall opened at this location. The impressive building provided a permanent home for numerous vendors and replaced the market stalls that had previously been scattered throughout the city center.
The historic hall was largely destroyed in an air raid on July 26, 1943. After the war, business initially continued under difficult conditions. A citizens’ initiative eventually campaigned for a new building, gathering 75,000 signatures.
The current market hall opened in 1955
After just 227 working days, the new market hall opened its doors on December 14, 1955. Hannover-based architect Erwin Töllner designed a clean, functional new building on the site of the destroyed previous hall.
To this day, the market hall is affectionately known as the “Belly of Hanover”—a fitting nickname for a place where food, enjoyment, and city life have gone hand in hand for generations.
