Gehry Tower
The Gehry Tower in Hannover is a striking nine-story building designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. It is located in the immediate vicinity of Steintorplatz and pays homage to the historic Steintor city gate. The project was commissioned by Objektgesellschaft mbH, a subsidiary of Üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG, which had previously collaborated with Gehry on a bus stop in Hannover. Archimedes Bauplanungsgesellschaft mbH handled the planning and design, while Philipp Holzmann AG Hannover served as the general contractor.
Construction work began in March 2000 after a year-long planning process and the demolition of the previous building. The total costs amounted to DM 8.5 million, which corresponds to around 4.3 million euros. The Gehry Tower was officially inaugurated on June 28, 2001 and offers approx. 2100 m² of space for office and event use. The external shape of the building is particularly striking, characterized by a twisted steel construction and load-bearing external walls. This twisting means that the eaves of the tower protrude by up to 2.50 meters from the first floor, giving the façade a dynamic curvature.
The exterior of the Gehry Tower consists of 2,800 polished stainless steel panels, which give the building a reflective surface. This surface changes its appearance depending on the lighting conditions and contributes to the building’s visual impact. Today, the Gehry Tower is occupied by various companies, including X-City Marketing Hannover GmbH and Public Broadcast Rundfunkgesellschaft mbH.
