Telemax

The Telemax is the highest television tower in northern Germany.

The Telemax in the Groß-Buchholz district

The Telemax is an impressive telecommunications tower in Hannover that was built between 1989 and 1992 and stands 282 meters tall. With its striking square base and asymmetrically positioned control tower, the structure boasts a unique architectural design that makes it a modern landmark. The tower is located in the Groß-Buchholz district, about six kilometers northeast of the city center, and is barely visible in Hannover’s cityscape due to its location, though it is clearly visible from up to 30 kilometers away in good weather.

The Telemax replaces the older “Telemoritz” television tower and is one of the tallest towers in Germany. The tower’s observation deck is located 185 meters above ground and was previously open to the public for events. The tower was constructed using 17,000 cubic meters of concrete and 4,000 tons of structural steel, with the foundation extending 16 meters deep into the ground. Originally, a round tower was planned, but the city decided to implement a more innovative architectural concept designed by the Danish firm Dissing+Weitling.

The tower became well-known in the region when the citizens of Hannover voted in 1992 to name it “Telemax,” inspired by Wilhelm Busch’s “Max and Moritz.” Today, the Telemax is no longer open to the public, though it is occasionally used by the fire department for high-altitude rescue drills. A particularly striking tradition was the annual illumination of the tower in Telekom’s magenta color for CeBIT. The structure is also equipped with an 85-ton steel lattice transmission mast, which rises to the top of the tower with a 30-meter-high fiberglass cylinder.
