New town hall
The New Town Hall is not only a landmark, but also one of the most sought-after photo motifs in the city.
What many visitors to Hanover mistake for a castle is actually the New City Hall: this magnificent Wilhelminian-style building, completed in 1913, is now one of the landmarks of the city on the Leine River. “All paid for in cash, Your Majesty!” City Director Heinrich Tramm proudly exclaimed to Emperor Wilhelm II at the inauguration. The city had spent over ten million marks on its stately town hall, built on 6,026 beechwood piles.

Even today, the New Town Hall serves as the seat of the mayor, the head of Hannover’s city administration. This is where political bodies meet, official guests are received, exhibitions are held, and the mayor’s office is located. However, the doors of this landmark are always open to visitors. And it’s well worth a visit, if only for the magnificent view. By the way: In 2013, the New Town Hall turned 100 years old!
