The Lower Saxony State Theater in Hannover ranks among the nation’s top institutions in both opera and drama. Under the Freies Theater Hannover brand, there are 14 independent theater companies that receive funding from the state capital and offer unique discoveries. Every spring, the Long Night of Theaters in more than 20 cities offers an exciting tour of the city’s performance venues. Every two years, Hannover hosts Theaterformen, one of the largest German theater festivals.

Classical music events are on the program in the extensively renovated Kuppelsaal of the HCC, Germany’s largest concert hall. Every three years, the “International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition Hannover” takes place, attracting talent from all over the world. It is the highest-prized violin competition in existence. As a guest performance venue, the Theater am Aegi consistently stages major productions ranging from musicals to operas and showcases stars from the worlds of music and comedy. At the Georgspalast, Zarah Leander and Heinz Erhardt once thrilled audiences. Here, the GOP Varieté-Theater Hannover continues this long tradition of entertainment. As a dance metropolis, Hannover takes center stage not only at the famous festivals TANZtheater INTERNATIONAL and Oster-Tanz-Tage.
