Braunschweig: A Guelph and Hanseatic city rich in art and culture
Braunschweig is home to historic ensembles and authentic neighborhoods steeped in a thousand years of history. As the residence of Henry the Lion, Duke of the Guelphs, and an imperial city, Braunschweig was already an important commercial center in its day and, then as now, a member of the Hanseatic League.
The cityscape is defined by the Oker River, which flows along the historic fortifications surrounding the city center. Today, inviting parks, mansions, and cultural institutions line the river, which is best explored on a leisurely boat tour.
With a population of around 250,000, this vibrant cultural scene offers the largest city between Hanover and Berlin an attractive year-round selection of art, theater, opera, dance, and music across all disciplines and genres; Braunschweig is also a leader in sports. Home to the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, the “City of the Lion” is home to one of Europe’s oldest museums—featuring exquisite collections and renowned masters such as Rubens and Rembrandt.
