Ernst August Canal
The Ernst-August Canal, located south of the Great Garden, was constructed between 1718 and 1720 to bridge the difference in elevation between the weir in Limmer and the rest of the Leine River. It also supplied water to the fountains in the Great Garden. Since navigation on the Leine ceased, the canal—which is just under one kilometer long and three to five meters wide—has lost its significance.
To bridge the difference in elevation between the weir at Limmer and the lower course of the Leine River, the Ernst-August Canal was built south of the Grosser Garten between 1718 and 1720. This canal also supplied water to the gardens in the neighboring Grosser Garten. Since commercial shipping on the Leine came to an end in the early 20th century, the canal—nearly one kilometer long and three to five meters wide—has lost its significance.
