Calenberger Neustadt, part of the Mitte district, is located in the heart of Hanover.
Everyone knows the Heinz von Heiden Arena, the Schützenplatz, the Waterloo Column, or the Goetheplatz intersection. Yet even to many residents of Hannover, Calenberger Neustadt is largely unknown as a distinct neighborhood. And yet this very area—which is turned into an island by the Leine, Ihme, and Schnellen Graben rivers and is characterized by numerous bridges—has so much to offer. A small neighborhood with a rich history, situated between Leibniz’s grave, the former “Street of Tolerance,” and modern buildings such as the Calenberger Esplanade.
The “Blue Thread” takes you to numerous interesting sites and buildings and gives you a deeper understanding of Hannover’s city history. At some points, it intersects with its big brother, the “Red Thread,” which connects the sights of Hanover’s Old Town. You can thus combine or extend your tour as you please. A walk along the banks of the Leine River on Franz-Mock-Weg is likely still something of an insider’s tip. The “Blue Thread” doesn’t leave it out.
Attention: Since, unlike the "Red Thread," there is no line painted on the pavement in this neighborhood, simply follow the signs to the 38 points of interest.
