The old village of Groß-Buchholz and the upmarket Kleefeld villa district are two very different parts of the city.
While more or less magnificent farmhouses have been preserved in the still-rural town of Buchholz, the country house district on the edge of the Eilenriede features stately townhouses, which were further expanded with the construction of the Kleefeld garden city (1928).
House Köritz
775 Years – Discover Your Hannover
The Köritz House on Pinkenburger Gang is the oldest dated farmhouse in the city. The two-post structure from 1619, featuring lower-frame timbering, displays closely spaced half-timbered posts on the gable end that extend beyond the lintel. The head beams cap the upper bays with pointed arches. Above the Groot Dör is the inscription “May the Lord preserve this house ...”. May this wish come true.
As many middle-class families moved out of the cramped old town into the countryside, a “country-style neighborhood without building lines”—designed by Gerhard Aengeneyndt and centered around Fichtestraße starting in 1894—emerged behind the architecturally striking St. Peter’s Church (1902), permitting only row houses with front yards. To “liven up the facades,” porches, bay windows, balconies, and loggias were required. Varied eave heights, gable extensions, dormers, and turrets created a dynamic roofscape. In addition, street corners were particularly emphasized by corner gables and tower structures.
