Ricklingen

Of the village of Ricklingen, which was first mentioned in 1124, only the estate of the Edelhof and a few farmhouses on Beekestraße remain.

Industrial development began in 1904 with the establishment of the Hannoversche Waggonfabrik Hawa, followed in 1925 by residential complexes built by the Spar- und Bauverein around Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. The gatehouse at Ricklinger Stadtweg 50/52, built in 1927, symbolizes the intention to accentuate the urban landscape with striking structures and to signal further development.

Edelhof Chapel

775 Years – Discover Your Hannover

Built around 1340 of limestone, the Edelhof Chapel forms the heart of the von Alten family’s estate, which has been preserved almost in its entirety. The chapel, formerly dedicated to the Virgin Mary, has a rectangular floor plan with corner quoins; a ridge turret crowns the steep hipped roof. The wood-clad, three-story manor house (built by 1750) towers over the surrounding farm buildings. The estate also includes a four-post building, which was constructed in 1813 as a school with a teacher’s residence. The entrance to the estate is marked by a small four-post building (circa 1813) with a stable. The farm gable of the four-post building, which lacks a projecting eave, is among the earliest examples of this architectural style in Hanover.

Gatehouse on Ricklinger Stadtweg

775 Years – Discover Your Hannover

The gatehouse at Ricklinger Stadtweg 50/52 stands out among the neighborhood’s expansion in the 1920s. It was built around 1927 according to plans by architects Schmidt and Niendecker. It serves as a visual barrier along the axis of Konrad-Hänisch-Straße and was intended to provide a transition to the planned neighborhood behind it. Two seven-story, tower-like corner buildings flank a lower central structure, which appears to open up via a three-part passageway through loggias. Noteworthy is the tension between the block-like, closed tower structures, which is further emphasized by a flared cornice with a zigzag band.
