2nd Aegidienkirche
Here you will find information about the Aegidienkirche.
The Aegidienkirche is located in the old town near the Aegidientorplatz.
St. Aegidius Church was built in the 13th century. The church tower was rebuilt between 1703 and 1717. Between 1826 and 1829, Georg Laves made various alterations to the church’s interior. The church suffered severe damage during World War II and was not rebuilt—its ruins now serve as a memorial to the victims of war and violence.
As a distinctive monument to the victims of war and violence, the 13th-century Aegidienkirche is a prominent feature of Hannover’s cityscape. The church has been redesigned several times: its tower between 1703 and 1717, and its interior between 1826 and 1829 by Georg Laves. After being largely destroyed during World War II, only the roofless stump remains today—yet as a place of worship, it has lost very little of its character.
