9. new gate

The New Gate was built between 1782 and 1783 in the area that would later become Waterlooplatz. It had to be demolished to make way for Waterlooplatz between 1826 and 1832 and was rebuilt in 1833 by architect Ernst Ebeling as a symbolic gate with four sandstone pillars and two guardhouses. In 1961, the four sandstone pillars were moved to their current location.

The Neues Tor (“New Gate”) was built in 1782–1783. When Waterlooplatz was expanded to become a square for military exercises and parades, the gate had to be removed. In 1833, Hanoverian architect Ernst Ebeling oversaw its monumental reconstruction as a symbolic gate featuring four sandstone pillars and two guardhouses. Since 1961, the pillars—without the guardhouses—have stood on Schlossstraße, near the Leintor Bridge, where the former Leintor once stood.
