Hanover Architecture Guide

From its origins as the residence of the Guelph dynasty, Hanover has developed into a modern metropolis, most recently experiencing a significant surge in development with Expo 2000. This architectural guide traces the architectural history of Lower Saxony’s capital city through seven geographically organized tours, beginning in the Middle Ages and continuing to the present day.

The more than 330 structures featured illustrate the diversity of Hannover’s architecture: medieval defensive towers are included, as are Baroque landscape gardens and examples of Brick Expressionism. A key focus of the book is on contemporary architecture. For after the devastation of World War II and the attempt at a “car-friendly” redesign, contemporary architecture is once again providing important impetus for the quality of urban life, and the city is even home to spectacular buildings by internationally renowned star architects.
