E6 Heiligers Fountain

In 1794, a sulfur-rich healing spring in the Eilenriede was enclosed in stone to create the Heiligers Spring. The spring was named after its discoverer, Ernst Anton Heiliger, the mayor of Hanover. The spring also feeds the nearby Kopperloch, a historic bathing spring that is colloquially known as the “Devil’s Bath.”

The sulfur-rich mineral spring at Eilenriede, discovered by Hanover Mayor Ernst Anton Heiliger, was given a square sandstone border featuring several inscriptions in 1794. In the early 19th century, the Heiligers-Brunnen, a designated historic site, was a popular destination for hikers. To this day, it continues to feed the nearby Kopperloch, a historic bathing spot popularly known as the “Teufelsbad,” or “Devil’s Bath.”
