The green thread

Hanover is a city of gardens—and the “Grüner Faden” (Green Thread) brings its 700-year-old garden culture to life along a unique route. Along 21 carefully selected stops, visitors can experience the diversity of Hanover’s garden art: from the medieval St. Nikolai Cemetery (1325) to the Baroque Herrenhausen Gardens and modern concepts such as the City Roofwalks.

The route connects historic sites such as the Hinüber Garden, the Georgengarten, the Welfengarten, and Hermann-Löns Park with green retreats such as the City Park, the Gardens of the World’s Religions, and the Engesohde City Cemetery. The landscape art of the EXPO Park, the dune landscape in the Eilenriede, and the natural areas in the Park of the Senses also demonstrate how innovatively Hanover approaches the use of green spaces.

Each of the stations represents a unique stage in Hanover's garden development - from Gothic to modern, near-natural gardens.

The new brochure "The Green Thread" offers background information, maps and tips on how to get there and will be available from mid-April for €3.50 at the Tourist Info and in the Großer Garten store
