At the top of the facade facing Human Rights Square 1 is a frieze depicting scenes from the city’s history. Right next to the mayor’s balcony is a frequently photographed scene: Electress Sophie, who brought the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen to their full splendor, is placing a laurel wreath on Leibniz’s head. The scholar saw her as a valued conversation partner with whom he often strolled through the gardens. Karl Gundelach created this depiction, which stands in a series depicting the major events of the city’s history. The city model in the entrance hall, dating from 1689, shows the city as it was in Leibniz’s time.
