Anyone standing beneath the chandelier on Sophienstraße in front of the Künstlerhaus will notice, at the very top left of the façade, the figure of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz on a corbel beneath a canopy. Wearing a curly wig and draped in a statesmanlike cloak, the scholar stands there with a composed expression. The sculptor Carl Dopmeyer (1824–1899), who was born in Springe, created the work—just as he did the Gänseliesel Fountain at the Steintor and the Luther Monument at the Marktkirche. The figure of Alexander von Humboldt (on the right side of the facade) also comes from Dopmeyer’s studio.
