The Hannover Historical Museum collects artifacts related to the history of the city of Hannover and the former Guelph territories of what is now the state of Lower Saxony. At night, the illuminated quote by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz on the side of the museum facing the Leine River is most clearly visible. Joseph Kosuth created it for the Expo 2000 World’s Fair in Hannover. The quote on the old armory comes from the polymath’s *Monadology*, in which he describes the interaction between mind and matter. Built in 1966, the museum stands at the city’s birthplace, on the Hohe Ufer. The museum’s interior vividly illustrates the city’s development from then until now, including a portrait of Leibniz and some of his personal belongings.
