Hannover: Very British – In the Footsteps of the Personal Union
In 1714, with Elector George Louis—who ascended the British throne as George I—the era of the personal union began, during which the rulers of Hanover also reigned over England. Although the two countries continued to exist separately, there was an exchange of ideas in science, agriculture, and the arts. Since the last king of the personal union, William IV, had no male heirs and the Guelph law of succession excluded female succession to the throne, the era of the personal union ended in 1837. Learn more about this fascinating period with the guided tour “Hanover: Very British – In the Footsteps of the Personal Union.”
Optional:
To start, you will be served "Welfentee" in the tea room. This tea is a tribute to the House of Welf, the House of Hanover, and the close ties between the royal houses of Hanover and Great Britain. Earl Grey, a true classic among teas, was designated the official beverage of the English court for over 200 years.
The tour is rounded off with a "Guinness" or non-alcoholic drink in the Dublin Inn, an Irish pub in the old town.
