Niki de Saint Phalle

The artist would have turned 84 on October 29, 2014—reason enough for the search engine to honor her with a Google Doodle. Hannover holds a special place in the painter and sculptor’s heart.

With this Google Doodle, the search engine commemorated Niki de Saint Phalle on her 84th birthday on October 29, 2014.

Niki de Saint Phalle left her creative mark on Hannover: since 1974, the Nanas have stood on the Hohe Ufer; though they initially sparked a storm of protest, they quickly became a local landmark. Beginning in 1999, the artist worked on the redesign of the Grotto in the Großer Garten, which was completed a year after her death in time for Expo 2000. Over 400 of her works are on display at the Sprengel Museum. Additionally, the promenade between Kröpcke and the main train station is named after her.
