Description

Located in the heart of Hanover is the Opera House, which was built in 1852 by Georg Friedrich Laves in the Late Classical style. After it was reduced to its foundations by incendiary bombs during World War II, the Schauspielhaus on Hildesheimer Straße and the Galeriegebäude in Herrenhausen served as temporary venues. In 1950, the opera house reopened as the first theater in West Germany following extensive renovations.

Diversity and internationalism shape the program and the ensemble—the State Opera seeks open dialogue with the local community and communication with the European opera scene. Alongside contemporary productions of works from the great classical repertoire, the program features world premieres, musical explorations that push the boundaries of genre, and formats designed for young audiences. At the start of the 2019/20 season, Laura Berman took over as artistic director of the Hanover State Opera, which collaborates with internationally renowned artists and is known for a diverse and innovative program that attracts attention far beyond Lower Saxony.

Marco Goecke served as director of the State Ballet from fall 2019 to February 2023. With his distinctive artistic vision, he shaped the art of dance in the 21st century like no other. Renowned choreographers from around the world are regularly invited to Hanover for commissioned works and the OsterTanzTage festival. The Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hannover is an opera and concert orchestra with a history of success spanning nearly four hundred years: In addition to opera and ballet performances, symphony concerts, and special concerts, the orchestra can also be experienced at extraordinary venues outside the State Opera, as well as at chamber concerts and children’s concerts.

The Hanover State Opera is a winner of the 2020 OPER! AWARDS and was named "Best Opera House." Each year, the OPER! AWARDS honor the best artists and professionals in the international opera world, both on and off stage, in a total of 20 categories.
