Description

About Landestrost Castle

Landestrost Castle was built between 1573 and 1584 in the Weserrenaissance style by Duke Erich II of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. It was constructed as the duke’s representative residence and administrative seat, through which he hoped to consolidate his territorial position. The castle was planned as a four-winged complex, but only the east and north wings were actually built. The castle’s simple, elegant exterior is mirrored in the design of its interiors. Richly painted barrel vaults still lend the interior a stately character today. The richly decorated sandstone entrance portals are particularly striking. The castle’s cellars consist of vaults and are connected to the casemates of the fortifications extending outward. Also worth seeing is the 250-year-old hornbeam hedge in the official garden.
