Open-Air Theater—The Deister Open-Air Stage

The Deister Open-Air Theater owes its existence to Otto Backhaus, a former school principal from Barsinghausen. In 1928, he arranged for the Klosterkammer to make the site of a former quarry on the edge of the Deister available for use as an open-air theater. The theater opened in 1931.  Today, the open-air theater is organized as a dynamic association. More than 700 volunteer members of the association ensure the theater’s operation, which features seating for approximately 1,000 spectators. Each year, the amateur actors stage a children’s play and two plays for a more adult audience.
