In addition to the Sprengel Collection, the city and state consolidated their holdings of 20th-century art from the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hannover and the Kestner Museum (now the Museum August Kestner) into the Sprengel Museum Hannover. The consolidation of these important collections makes the Sprengel Museum Hannover one of the most significant centers for modern art. The museum’s art collection has grown steadily through acquisitions, and primarily through donations and permanent loans.

In addition to its permanent collection, the Sprengel Museum Hannover presents numerous special exhibitions, offering a broad overview of artistic developments from the modern era to the present day.
