Hannover Profile: The Trade Fair and Event Capital at the Heart of Europe

Here you will find a profile of the city of Hannover.

Hannover: A Green Trade Fair and Event City in the Heart of Europe

From pioneering architecture and infrastructure to attractive local recreational areas in the region—Lower Saxony’s state capital, with a population of approximately 540,000 (as of late 2015), is characterized by charming contrasts. In the newly designated UNESCO City of Music, over 60 different venues and museums offer cultural experiences of the highest caliber through top-notch productions, concerts, and exhibitions. For example, the State Theater of Hannover, with its opera and drama divisions, and exhibition venues such as the Sprengel Museum and the kestnergesellschaft enjoy international renown.

In the city center, two of Germany’s most popular shopping streets—Georgstraße and Bahnhofstraße—invite you to enjoy a day of shopping. A variety of shopping arcades, the Ernst-August-Galerie, and unique boutiques in the picturesque Old Town, along the popular Lister Meile shopping district, or in the lively Linden neighborhood round out the shopping experience. Numerous street cafés and quaint pubs also offer the chance to wind down after a day of shopping.

You can also relax wonderfully in the many natural oases of one of Germany’s greenest major cities. The Eilenriede, one of Europe’s largest urban forests, is just as inviting for walking, biking, and inline skating as the Maschsee. Right in the heart of the city, the Maschsee, with its sailboats and palm-lined waterfront promenade, offers a touch of Mediterranean flair.

The Herrenhausen Gardens invite you to take a stroll through winding groves, miles of boxwood hedges, bubbling garden fountains, and golden sculptures. They were laid out over 300 years ago by Electress Sophie based on French models—and are now considered among the most significant and beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe. Every year, they serve as a fantastic backdrop for thrilling events such as the International Fireworks Competition, the “Kleines Fest im Großen Garten,” the “KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen,” or the Winter Variety Show. With the reconstructed Herrenhausen Palace, which houses a modern museum and a conference center, the Herrenhausen Gardens—recently honored as Europe’s best historic garden—have gained yet another attraction.

it is one of Northern Germany’s most popular tourist attractions.

Hannover is always in season: Throughout the year, sporting events, open-air concerts, and folk festivals invite you to join in the excitement and celebrate. Highlights such as the Schützenfest and the Maschseefest are major attractions for visitors from all over the world.

The area around Hanover offers a wide range of recreational activities for all ages, including the Steinhuder Meer, the Deister, the Calenberger Land, and the famous Marienburg Castle. The historic half-timbered buildings in many of the region’s towns create a unique atmosphere.

Hospitality has a long tradition in Hannover, the city home to the world’s largest exhibition grounds. As a hub for trade fairs and events, the capital of Lower Saxony is in the international spotlight every year. Since 1947, millions of trade fair visitors have been welcomed here year after year. Among others, internationally significant trade fairs such as HANNOVER MESSE, Agritechnica, EMO, and Domotex take place in Hannover.
