Just outside Hanover lies a lake—Lake Steinhuder Meer. This scenic lake in the western part of the Hanover Holiday Region covers a total of 29 square kilometers, though it is very shallow. As a result, it offers excellent conditions for all kinds of water sports and warms up quickly to a pleasant swimming temperature in the summer. The Mardorf beach “Weiße Düne” or the Steinhude’s Sculpture Promenade bathing island, for example, attract visitors with their sandy beaches and clean water, children’s playgrounds, and beach volleyball courts. On Lake Steinhuder Meer, active vacationers can windsurf, sail a dinghy across the waves, or set out on the water aboard one of the passenger boats. And after a day by the water, it’s just a short trip to the state capital of Hannover in the evening, where a diverse entertainment program—ranging from variety shows to opera—awaits.

Hiking, horseback riding, playing golf
The area around Lake Steinhuder Meer offers a wide range of recreational activities for hikers, horseback riders, cyclists, and families. Whether it’s mini-golf or golf, Nordic walking or inline skating, renting e-bikes, or visiting the mystical lake-meadow wetlands and the Tote Moor in the nature park: everything is within easy reach in this local recreation area. Information on activities in, on, and around the water can be found online at www.visit-hannover.com/active . Altwarmbüchener See, located in the northeast of Hannover, is also a great spot for swimming, boating, and surfing. Even Maschsee, right in the heart of the state capital, has a swimming beach, boat rentals, and a pier for passenger boats along its shores.

By Water Through Hannover
Like Lake Steinhuder Meer, the Leine and Ihme rivers, which flow right through the heart of Hannover, are ideal for paddling. Along their banks, you can rent canoes or board a passenger boat for a scenic excursion featuring excellent onboard dining. Even at the Hannover Adventure Zoo, a boat tour beckons: on the river course in the Zambezi theme world, visitors glide silently through the African landscape, passing very close to hippos, zebras, and flamingos. From the water, the Region Hannover reveals its most beautiful side.
"Experience the Sea"
The 32-page brochure "Lake Steinhuder Meer: Experience the Lake" introduces the lake, the surrounding towns, recreational activities on and around the water, and local attractions. Highlights include the Münchehagen Dinosaur Park—the world’s largest dinosaur museum—the Steinhude Sculpture Promenade, the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum, the Steinhude Toy Museum, and much more. The brochure is available free of charge at the Hannover Tourist Information office at Ernst-August-Platz 8 or can be downloaded at www.visit-hannover.com/brochures can be downloaded.
